Drive By Photography

There are dumber things I could do (cough, cough.... fall off a ladder, cough) to get a photo, but there are some sights I couldn't pass up. Driving to the other side of the Mississippi River is something I don't get to do  often. So when I had to run an errand to Algiers, it becomes an opportunity to get some shots I'd probably never get otherwise.

The Crescent City Connection is one of three bridges spanning from New Orleans to towns surrounding the metropolitan area.

Unlike many of the bridges I cross over in New Orleans, the CCC has two separate spans, each made of steel and concrete. This cantilever bridge is listed as the 5th longest bridge of its design in the world.

To be honest, this shot is suppose to be one of the New Orleans skyline, but my car's pillar was in the way. You cannot see the skyline at all! Let's just pretend I'm checking the rear view mirror.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. This one is a little better. You get a couple of buildings here and there. My real focus is the National World War II Museum on the bottom left. Speaking of which, the National WWII Museum is holding their WWII Air Power Expo again this year from October 23-25. If you're in town, it's definitely something to check out.

Here's another shot of the skyline, This time you can see the Mercedes Benz Superdome. For all the years I've lived in New Orleans, I have never been inside the Superdome.

Unlike the Superdome, here's a place that I have been. This is the Mega Zeph, a steel and wood roller coaster in the former Six Flags Theme Park in New Orleans East. It's a sight that I see just about everyday, but rarely photograph. I've been on this roller coaster twice before Hurricane Katrina. These days the park lays dormant and is used either as a movie set or a staging area by the city.

In case you're wondering, no I did not use my phone to take these pictures. I used this camera, the Canon PowerShot A2200 HD. I brought it last month as an everyday carry. On the one hand, it doesn't have image stabilization, it really sucks at low light, and it does not have a manual mode. On the other hand its compact form factor and ease of use makes it ideal for when I want to get a snapshot.
